| The Cycle of the Decades was originally
written about in 1878 by William Morton Halbert, an English economist. Later on
W.D. Gann popularized this concept in his stock and commodity courses. Their basic
finding was that markets tend to have similarities as a decade unfolds. Years
ending in “0” tended to have similarities, years ending in “1”
tended to have similarities, years ending in “2” tended to have similarities
etc. Today the Cycle of the Decades is well used by stock market cycle analysts.
I find it quite interesting that the Cycle of the Decades is little used in
analysis of commodity prices. My research shows this is a mistake. Research shows
certain patterns that form early in a decade can lay out a general roadmap of
what is to come later on. Years ending in 6 and 7 are particularly important.
